Averroes (1126-98) was born in Cordoba, Spain, the son of a judge. He
studied Muslim jurisprudence, philosophy, mathematics and medicine. He
held various positions including judge in Seville and Cordoba, and
physician to the caliph of Morocco and Muslim Spain.
Averroes’ extensive writings on Aristotle were translated into Latin and
Hebrew and had a profound impact on the development of the
Scholastic school of philosophy in medieval Europe. He also wrote
treatises on medicine, law, and astronomy.
